God has pockets

God has pockets

God has me in His pocket. The word “pocket” in Hebrew is Hosen. Hosen means pocket or the breastplate of the high priest! The root word means “contain” or “sparkle”. God carries me on His chest, like a precious jewel, just like the high priest wore the breastplate with the different gemstones as a constant reminder of the 12 tribes of Israel. Jesus is our high priest and He constantly intercedes for us, carrying us like a precious stone on His chest. In his pocket the priest also kept urim and thummim, two mysterious stones that represented light and perfection.

I was contemplating this idea of me being in God’s pocket when something popped up on my phone about sea otters – they have pockets! They have a loose pouch of skin under their forearms where they carry a favorite rock they use for cracking open shellfish and clams. They keep this rock their whole life. We’re like God’s favorite rock, His secret weapon, He keeps tucked away closest to His heart, in His pocket.

Joshua 1:3 says: “every place upon which the sole of your foot shall tread have I given to you”. The Hebrew word for “sole of your foot” is Kaph and it’s also used to describe the physical part of the hand that can hold or grasp objects. It literally means hollow or pocket. It conveys the idea of power, possession and care.

This throws new light to my study of the word pocket. We’re not just cute and precious in His sight. We’re like a secret, powerful weapon – hidden, protected and treasured closest to his heart, in His pocket. The word for hide/protect in Hebrew (tsaphan), also means treasure/store up. God is hiding and protecting/treasuring us in Himself as we’re treasuring His word and storing up His wisdom inside our hearts. When we know without a doubt that we are treasured by God in the possession and care of God’s love we become powerful weapons in His hand to go out and possess the land.
